AstraZeneca, the world leader in the production and manufacture of medical drugs and vaccines, marked the International Youth Day by proceeding with the five-year “Youth Health Program” (YHP) which aims to raise awareness of over 700,000 young Egyptians on how to make better choices towards a healthier lifestyle alongside the endorsement of five Egyptian Ministries and multiple partners.

YHP comes within AstraZeneca’s role as a responsible advocate that contributes to the development of the community in which it operates.

Additionally, AstraZeneca believes in the importance of keeping an open dialogue with youth, enabling different generations to take actions to be healthier, and encouraging the preservation of the environment.

Moreover, since its launch last year until now, the first half of 2022, YHP has succeeded in reaching around 220,000 young people and teachers, through multiple activities. This took place, in partnership with the program’s steering committee, emphasizing the importance of physical activity for a healthier lifestyle.

As well, YHP comes within the program’s strategic partner Plan International Egypt’s strategy to empower and promote the participation of youth, both females and males, to take active and positive roles towards the issues that affect their basic rights; one of which is to attain good health and avoid non-communicable diseases (NCD) such as diabetes and heart diseases.

Dr. Hatem Werdany, Country President of AstraZeneca said: “AstraZeneca’s celebration of International Youth Day comes within its commitment to work on a future in which youth could acquire the best sustainable healthcare solutions, as well as our eagerness to support the efforts of the Egyptian government to achieve the sustainable development goals (SDGs)”.

Al Werdany added “Our YHP activities contribute to achieving SDG Goal 3.4, to reduce premature deaths related to NCD by a third by 2030 and promote mental health and well-being. It is worth mentioning, that during the first half of 2022, AstraZeneca participated in various events, namely, “Our Planet, Our Health” campaign during the celebration of World Health Day, where we raised awareness on the importance of protecting the environment and its impact on our health.”

Furthermore, Al Werdany emphasized on AstraZeneca’s strategy to provide better healthcare opportunities for healthier life through the YHP and its activations, by combating the most common NCDs (Cancer, Diabetes Type 2, Heart Diseases, Respiratory Diseases, Mental and Psychological Diseases). This is done by working with youths to reduce the uptake of unhealthy behaviors that lead to NCDs in later stages in life, along with the partnership with more than 30 specialized organizations.

Dr. Mohamed Kamal, Country Director of Plan International Egypt, said “International Youth Day is an opportunity for governments and international bodies to draw attention to youth issues around the world, especially in Egypt, and celebrate the efforts of young people, specifically young women, and their positive contributions to their societies and communities in general.”

“The interest in International Youth Day comes within the framework of Plan International Egypt’s strategy to empower young women and men, and highlight their roles in the communities, through promoting their economic and social empowerment, as we believe that youths are not only the present but also the future our country. Moreover, investing in capacitating youth, developing their skills, and working alongside them as partners in the development process, is the ideal way to achieve sustainable development.” Mohamed added.

Mohamed Kamal emphasized that Plan International Egypt advances children’s and youth’s rights, especially girls and young women, and strives for a just world to drive positive and sustainable changes in practice, in their lives and the lives of their families, through implementing programs that contribute to Egypt Vision 2030, focusing on providing them with the needed skills and knowledge to fulfill this vision.

“Moreover, we implemented a number of diverse programs and projects in 13 governorates where we operate, and in partnership with numerous governmental entities, private sectors, and academic organizations, to ensure a safe, and protective environment where children and youth of both genders are able to fulfill their potentials.”
