edChild selected for the 2021 Education for Sustainable Development Award from World OMEP
edChild, a unique module around sustainable development that both develops competence and strengthens educators’ ability to teach, has been selected for the 2021 Education for Sustainable Development Award from World OMEP.
The concept of sustainable development centres around development which satisfies the needs of the world today, without compromising the ability of future generations to satisfy their needs. Sustainable development has three dimensions – economic, social and environmental.
Developed in conjunction with preschools in Sweden, the program and associated app help educators to tackle the sometimes complex challenges of teaching and learning around sustainable development in early childhood.
Within the app educators find an introduction to sustainable development, written by fellow educators in conjunction with a researcher, and suggestions for follow up articles and books for further study.
Educators can also interact with one another and share pedagogical activities with one another. More than 300 activities are also populated into the app, walking educators through how to work democratically with children, or how to make different choices to contribute to sustainable development.
Following the award, the edChild team said they are now focused on ensuring the work is made widely available to educators around the world, with the app available free of charge to individual educators.
“We want as many people as possible to take part in the material produced within the module,” Sofia Zätterström, Co-Founder and CEO of edChild said.
“In early childhood education, we have a responsibility to lay the foundation for an interest and responsibility for Sustainable Development, and in edChild we do it in a concrete context for the children,” she explained.
“Through our technology, educators can more easily meet and inspire one another with their fantastic knowledge.”
edChild is inspired by Swedish pedagogy and research and was started in 2019 in conjunction with Hoppetossa Preschools. During the project’s early days, more preschools and educators joined edChild, with more than 800 educators using the platform in the present day after the finished product was launched in September 2020.
The educator app is available for download in the AppStore and on Google Play, with a web interface available for educational leaders and directors.
