Environmental symposiums, whacky worm farms and school sustainability squads are all part of teacher life for Robyn Yates.

Described as a passionate, inspiring and tireless leader, the Tinana State School teacher has won the 2020 Sustainable Schools Network Teacher of the Year award.

“I’ve dedicated a long time to environmental projects and been passionate about it since 2009,” Ms Yates said.

The School Sustainability Awards are an initiative of the Sustainable Schools Network and Gecko Environment Council and acknowledge the role teachers play in engaging and educating students in sustainability and conservation.

A ‘whole-of-school’ approach

Ms Yates has been praised for creating strong partnerships within the community and meaningful projects within her own school at Tinana near Maryborough in Queensland.

“I encourage a whole-of-school approach and we manage our school resources through our environmental plan,” Ms Yates said.

A video from her school students and wider community impressed the judges and was included in Ms Yates nomination as she competed against 20 finalists from schools across south-east Queensland and northern New South Wales.

“It’s about doing what you can, so we have enough for now and enough for the future and teaching that to students and letting them know they can make a difference no matter what age,” Ms Yates said.

“It’s not just about the environment but a whole sustainable approach.”

The 2020 Tinana state school symposium known as STEAM has been cancelled due to COVID-19, but Ms Yates is working with the Fraser Coast Council to set up awards to recognise students in the local region to highlight more sustainability projects.
