Egypt takes lions share of Arab universities on Times Rankings
Twenty Egyptian universities were listed on the 2021 Times Higher Education World University Rankings which were issued in October 2020. The number of Egyptian universities placed on the list was the largest among Arab universities.
The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2021 include more than 1,500 universities across 93 countries and regions, making them the largest and most diverse university rankings to date.
The table of rankings is based on 13 carefully calibrated performance indicators that measure an institution’s performance across four areas; teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.
This year’s ranking analyzed more than 80 million citations across over 13 million research publications and included survey responses from 22,000 scholars globally.
Trusted worldwide by students, teachers, governments and industry experts, this year’s league table provides great insight into the shifting balance of power in global higher education.
The twenty Egyptian universities on the list included Aswan University (401-500), Mansoura University (401-500), Suez Canal University (501-600), Cairo University (601-800), Kafr El Sheikh University (601-800), Beni Suef University (801-1000), Benha University (801-1000), and Sohag University (801-1000).
The list also comprised the University of Alexandria (1001+), Al Azhar University (1001+), Ain Shams University (1001+), Assiut University (1001+), Fayoum University (1001+), Helwan University (1001+), Menoufia University (1001+), Minya University (1001+), Port Said University (1001+), Tanta University (1001+), South Valley University (1001+), and Zagazig University (1001+).
Arab universities on the ranking list:
The number of Saudi and Algerian universities included on the Times Higher Education World University Rankings came in the second position after Egypt with each having 10 universities listed.
The Saudi universities on the list included King Abdulaziz University (201-250), Alfaisal University (351-300), King Saud University (401-500), King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (501–600), King Khaled University (501-600), Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University (801-1000), King Saudi bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences (801-1000), King Faisal University (1001+), Qassim University (1001+), and Umm Al-Qura University (1001+).
The Algerian universities on the list comprised Ferhat Abbas Sétif University (501-600), University of Oran (801-1000), University of Biskra (1001+), Blida 1 University(1001+), University of Béjaïa (1001+), University of Constantine (1001+), M’Hamed Bougara University of Boumerdès (1001+), University of Sciences and Technology Houari Boumediene (1001+), University of Science and Technology of Oran Mohamed-Boudiaf (1001+), and University of Tlemcen (1001+).
Jordan, Tunisia and Morocco came in the third position with each having five universities on the list.
The Jordanian universities on the list are the Jordan University of Science and Technology (401–500), Al Balqa Applied University (601-800), University of Jordan (801–1000), Hashemite University (1001+) and Yarmouk University (1001+).
The Tunisian universities placed on the list are the University of Manouba (1001+), University of Monastir(1001+), University of Sfax (1001+), University of Sousse (1001+), and University of Tunis El Manar(1001+).
The Moroccan universities on the list included Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah University (801-1000), Ibn Togail University (1001+), Université Hassan II de Casablanca (1001+), University of Marrackech Cadi Ayyad (1001+), and Mohammed V University of Rabat (1001+).
The UAE and Lebanon came in the fourth position with each having four universities on the list.
The UAE universities on the list comprised the United Arab Emirates University (301-350), Khalifa University (351-400), University of Sharjah (601-800), and Zayed University (801-1000).
The Lebanese universities are the American University of Beirut (301-350), Lebanese American University (801-1000), Université Saint-Joseph de Beyrouth (801–1000), and Lebanese University (1001+).
Iraq came in the fifth position with two universities on the list; University of Basrah (1001+) and University of Technology (1001+).
The list also included Oman’s Sultan Qaboos University (801-1000) and Kuwait’s Kuwait University (1001+).
African Universities:
The list also included African universities, especially of South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya and Uganda.
The list included eight South African Universities; University of Cape Town (155), Stellenbosch University (251-300), University of KwaZuku Natal (351-400), North-West University (501-600), University of Johannesburg (601-800),University of Western Cape (601-800), University of South Africa (1001+) and Tshwane University of Technology (1001+).
The list also included four Nigerian universities; Lagos State University (501-600), Covenant University (801-1000), University of Nigeria Nsukka (1001+), and Obafemi Awolowo University (100+).
The list also included Kenya’s University of Nairobi (301-800) and Uganda’s Makerere University (401-500).
Top universities of the Times Higher Education World University Rankings :
The University of Oxford topped the rankings for the fifth consecutive year, while mainland China’s Tsinghua University becomes the first Asian university to break into the top 20 under the current methodology (launched in 2011).
The US claims a record eight places in the top 10, after the University of California, Berkeley climbed six places to seventh, but US universities outside the top 200 show signs of decline.
Meanwhile, there are 141 first-time entrants in the rankings this year, topped by France’s recently merged Paris-Saclay University (joint 178th). India has the highest number of new entries (14) and as a result boasts a record number of ranked institutions (63).
