Egypt to graduate 1st logistic diploma batch under SDGs

Egypt will graduate on Wednesday the first batch of logistic diploma holders under the new vocational education system, the Egyptian Education Ministry undersecretary said.

Egypt has upgraded the vocational education system in line with the Sustainable Development Goals to cater for the labor market needs, especially the Suez Canal Axis project which needs qualified logistic cadres, Nabawi Bahi said.

The measure will help Egypt attain the Sustainable Development Goals on upgrading quality of education and linking it to labor market needs in order to secure decent work for youth.

About 276 students applied for the three-year diploma and 56 teachers were trained for the purpose.

The logistic diploma was launched in two schools in Port Said and Ismailia in December 2016 in collaboration with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) program “Workforce Improvement and Skills Enhancement (WISE)”

Through the Workforce Improvement and Skills Enhancement (WISE) project, USAID seeks to improve technical secondary education to meet the needs of the job market, benefiting vocational school students and teachers as well as the private sector.

WISE aims to establish partnerships between businesses and technical schools in order to understand skills needed for employment – reducing the current skills mismatch, creating a pool of qualified candidates, and linking students with jobs.

WISE will also improve the performance of the private sector through in-house training and improved human resource strategies that reduce staff turnover. It will seek to build the capacity of business associations to advocate for policy and regulatory reforms related to labor market efficiency.
