Egypt’s digital transformation project wins AGFUND int’l prize for serving SDG 8
Egypt’s Digital Transformation for Sustainable Development in Egypt (DT4SDE) project won the 2022 Prince Talal International Prize for Human Development, by the Arab Gulf Program for Development (AGFUND).
The prize was focused on “Decent Work and Economic Growth,” which corresponds with Goal 8 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG8).
The project – developed by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) – won the third category prize, specified for projects implemented by governmental bodies (ministries and public institutions) or social business enterprises.
DT4SDE was one of 108 projects nominated for the Prize in its four categories. Only 54 projects that met the criteria were evaluated. The amount of the prize is $200,000.
Egypt’s winning of the prize marks the culmination of MCIT efforts in adopting a broad strategy to bring about digital transformation in light of Egypt Vision 2030.
The Ministry works to introduce ICT in different spheres of community development, upgrade the digital infrastructure, build capacity, and advance innovation, thus improving Egypt’s ranking at regional and international levels.
The project aims to improve the quality of life by further employing ICT tools and applications, raising awareness of the power of technology, and supporting sustainable community development.
This is achieved by building digital capacity and qualifying people to cope with the digital transformation, helping build a digital society.
Within the framework of MCIT strategy and with the aim of developing skills for employment, DT4SDE contributes to the adaptation of innovative technological solutions to enhance the employability of all segments of society, especially Persons with Disabilities (PwDs), women, and youth to help them land decent jobs.
The project also aims at supporting small and medium enterprises (SMEs), entrepreneurship, and freelancing.
DT4SDE is carried out through different activities; Qodwa-Tech initiative for empowering women, Jobs and Skills for PwDs with a Focus on ICT-based Solutions Project, Initiatives for promoting e-learning and qualifying youth for freelancing, and activating the Role of IT Clubs in Community Development Project
It is worth mentioning that this is the second time that MCIT projects win AGFUND Prize. In 2010, the “Integrated Program to Develop Siwa Oasis Using ICT” project won the first prize category, “Development of Remote and Rural Communities through ICT”. The main objective of the project was to empower Siwa residents to develop their skills and community through ICT tools.
Prince Talal International Prize subjects align with the Sustainable Development Goals 2030. Each year, an SDG is selected as a thematic focus for the Prize. Winners of the Prize in its four categories receive cash amounts, certificates of recognition, and trophies. The first category prize is for projects implemented by UN agencies or international and regional NGOs; the second for projects by national NGOs; the third for projects of governmental bodies (ministries and public institutions) or social business enterprises; and the fourth for projects initiated, funded and/or implemented by individuals.
