Environment Minister Yasmine Fouad said climate change represents the major challenge facing the world in the current period.

She made the remarks on Monday in a speech delivered on her behalf by Ali Abosena, CEO of the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency, during the 4th Forum on Strategies for Transition to Green Economy – which is organized by CSR Egypt under the theme of “From Vision to Implementation.”

She said recent scientific reports concerned with climate change underlined the pressing need to curb global warming, adapt effectively with the negative impact of climate change and mobilize needed funds for confronting climate change.

Climate change has a powerful impact on humanity in accordance with scientific facts. This has prompted world countries to team up to find realistic solutions, she said.

She noted that climate change talks started in 2015 , but the actions taken on the ground were not up to the required level.

Climate change has also badly affected food security in several countries, therefore world countries decided to join hands to face climate change, she said.

She added that Egypt as the chair of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) – which is due to be held in Sharm El Sheikh in November – was asked to start taking measures on the ground to confront climate change.

She noted that the African continent, including Egypt, has barely contributed to climate change, although it was largely affected by it.

Since the 2015 Paris climate agreement, Egypt has played a pioneering role in Africa to confront climate change, she said, accentuating the importance of adaptation to climate change for developing countries.

She noted that Egypt has implemented several projects to protect the Nile Delta and water alongside ventures for sustainable transportation.

She referred also to the issuance of the national strategy for climate change.

She also highlighted the efforts exerted this year to activate the role of youths, women, civil community and private sector in addressing climate change.
