Egypt’s adventurer Ali Abdo who managed to achieve another World Guinness Record became an icon for promoting Egypt’s efforts to protect the environment and achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

He copped the title this time for recording the greatest distance on an electric motorcycle in 24 hours (individual) at 919.87 km (571.5 miles). The adventure was the first of its kind to be held in Egypt’s New Alamein City which represents a model of Egypt’s sustainable cities.

The event – on September 17, 2021 – was held as part of the presidential initiative “Go Green” and under the patronage of the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Ministry of Environment.

Environment Minister Yasmine Fouad has commended Ali Abdo for being keen on propagating for the efforts being exerted by Egypt to protect the environment and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals through using clean energy and eco-friendly transports.

She added that holding the event in New Alamein city sends a message to the entire world that Egypt focuses on the protection of the environment and sustainability of its natural resources.

She stressed the key role played by youths in protecting the environment and preserving its natural resources.

The minister underlined the youths’ pivotal role in protecting the environment and natural resources, noting that the ministry is adopting strategies for getting youths involved in environmental activities to create a new generation of environment protectors.

For his part, Abdo thanked the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry for Youth and Sports for taking all necessary measures to help him break anew the Guinness World Records.

Ali pointed out that the trip took place on an 8-km-long closed road in the New Alamein City in accordance with the conditions set out by the Guinness World Records, adding that it took him 113 laps to achieve this record of 919.87 km.

He noted that the adventure was also meant to encourage people to depend more on eco-friendly transports and consider environment protection in their daily life.

Abdo noted that he participated in June 2021 in marking the World Environment Day by riding his  electric motorcycle for 1000 kilometers to incentivize people to use sustainable transportation.

In this adventure, he was also keen to highlight Egypt’s sustainable development efforts as he drove the motorcycle from Alexandria to the Red Sea to shed light on charging stations across Egypt and how the experience of using an electric vehicle is interesting.

In June 2017, Ali Abdo was the first Arab to break the Guinness World Record for the greatest distance on a motocross bike in 24 hours by an individual through achieving a record of 613.59 km (381.27 miles). This adventure took place in the Red Sea resort city of El Gouna.

In September 2019, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Egypt partnered with Abdo to promote development issues; sustainable development, eradication of poverty, gender equality, climate change, and environment.

This collaboration was also meant to raise awareness on the SDGs, particularly environment protection as well as mitigation of and adaptation to climate change.
