Huya is the first Chinese organization to join the United Nations Development Program’s Mission 1.5 initiative which aims to educate millions of people on ways to stop climate change through an innovative mobile game.

Huya is the first official partner from China of UNDP’s Mission 1.5 campaign, which was launched in New York City earlier this year.

Guangzhou-headquartered Huya owns one of the largest live-streaming sites in China, with 150 million unique users per month, which will help the game reach millions of new players.

The partnership was announced on the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, an annual event for citizens around the world to show their support for protecting the Earth. The theme this year is climate action and will see the digital landscape fill with conversations about climate change.

The partnership also saw superstar gamers Gu Ying and Rita announced as Mission 1.5 Champions – helping to bring the game to their many fans.

How the game helps people combat climate change:

Gu Yingsaid: “Mission 1.5 is a really fun way to learn about all the different ways to help stop climate change during this time of COVID-19 when many people are staying at home. I think people in China will really enjoy it. I’m very proud to become a Mission 1.5 Champion and to be part of a growing movement spreading the word about the game.”

Rita said: “Mission 1.5 is teaching me many things about climate change. The most interesting was to find out that women and vulnerable people commonly face higher risks from climate change. Being a woman professional streamer, I am proud to be appointed a Mission 1.5 Champion and join the movement to change the world with this game.”

Gao Hong Liang, Vice president of Huya said: “We in the private sector are joining UNDP and citizens around the world in the fight against climate change. We are proud to announce this partnership with UNDP and to spread knowledge about climate change through this innovative game on Earth Day.”

Cassie Flynn, Senior Advisor on Climate Change, UN Development Programsaid: “Gaming is hugely popular around in the world, which is why Mission 1.5 is playing an important part in helping people to learn about climate change and promote bold solutions. We are really excited to be working together with Huya to bring the game to more people in China.”

The Mission 1.5 campaign is backed by leading campaigners such as the chair of the Paris climate talks, Christiana Figueres, and former president of Ireland, Mary Robinson, among others. So far, 1.26 million people have played the game.
