Environment Minister Yasmine Fouad said Egypt can cooperate with UNICEF to launch a media campaign on climate change and presenting topics targeting children and youths in various media and social media.

The two sides can also cooperate in environmental activities in addition to launching an annual award for spreading awareness among youths and children about climate change and biodiversity, Fouad said.

She made the remarks during a meeting on Sunday with Jeremy Hopkins, UNICEF Representative in Egypt.

She underlined the importance of establishing a link between the issues of climate change, protecting biodiversity and combating desertification.

She noted that President Abdel Fattah El Sisi launched – during the United Nations Biodiversity Conference 2018 – an initiative calling the world to link the three Rio conventions.

She added that the two sides can also cooperate in a national dialogue on climate change – which is due to be launched soon.

The dialogue will also be targeting children and youths, she said, adding that unifying efforts to confront climate change would be an important message to deliver.

She underlined that specialized United Nations agencies should put the climate change issue at the heart of their development plans.

For his part, Jeremy Hopkins, UNICEF Representative in Egypt, said the UNICEF program aims to sensitize children to environmental challenges, noting that working programs have been designed to be implemented in this domain in various countries, topped by Egypt.

Hopkins said he is looking forward to cooperating with Egypt in spreading awareness among youths through a national strategy for climate change 2050.

He highlighted support for Egypt’s efforts to gear up for the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27).
