Uber partners with Clorox to promote cleanliness as cities reopen

Uber decided to join hands with Clorox to promote cleanliness as cities reopen. Uber has redesigned its experience to help address new health and safety concerns, launching rider and driver checklists, face cover or mask requirements for all users, and face cover verification technology for drivers and delivery people.

Over the past few months, Uber has been working with experts and building new partnerships focused on cleanliness.

Starting in July, Uber is partnering with Clorox to provide nearly 600,000 canisters of Clorox Disinfecting Wipes to drivers in three pilot cities — Atlanta, Chicago, and New York City. When drivers confirm they have Clorox Disinfecting Wipes available in their vehicle via the driver checklist, riders in the three pilot cities will receive an in-app notification prior to being picked up that the disinfecting wipes are available for use in the car.

Clorox has identified the high touch hard surfaces in cars to help riders and drivers identify the key spots to clean before and after every trip.

Drivers should focus on the front part of the car that includes the steering wheel, gear shifts, cup holders, and door handles while riders should focus on the back area of the car including seat belt buckles, window controllers, and door handles.

Clorox Disinfecting Wipes can be used against the virus that causes COVID-19 on hard nonporous surfaces.

The company is piloting this partnership and in-app feature in these three cities first, offering up to 200,000 canisters of Clorox wipes per month, with the possibility of expanding to more cities soon.

As riders and drivers return to using Uber to get around, it’s important that they know what Uber is doing to slow the spread of COVID-19 and what they can do to help stay healthy and safe.

The company has been working with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) to share safety tips specifically geared toward rideshare drivers on how to clean their vehicles, focusing on frequently touched surfaces to disinfect.

Prior to going online and accepting trips, drivers are required to go through a safety checklist, confirming they have followed certain safety protocols, such as disinfecting the car, and are wearing a face cover or mask by taking a selfie with the mask on. As a reminder, face covers or masks are required for all riders and drivers when using Uber.

“Cleanliness is a shared responsibility and we all have a role to play in helping keep each other safe and healthy. We encourage riders to disinfect the vehicle at the beginning of their trip, especially the most frequently touched areas in the back seat of the car,” Uber said in a statement.

Drivers are also encouraged to clean high touch areas as frequently as possible, and at a minimum, the CDC recommends cleaning the vehicle at the beginning and end of the day.

So far, the company has given over 5 million masks and 115,000 units of other cleaning supplies to drivers in the United States and Canada. Uber’s partnership with Clorox will help ensure drivers in the pilot cities have continued access to supplies.

Uber has committed $50 million to purchasing health and safety supplies and is investing even more in education and technology.

As cities continue to move through this crisis, the company will continue to proceed with caution and safety top of mind.
