Universities of 10 Arab states listed among world’s top 2000 universities in 2019-2020..Egypt largest in number

Universities of 10 Arab states have been listed among world’s top 2000 universities in line with World University Rankings 2019-2020 which has been recently issued by the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR)  – a leading consulting organization providing policy advice, strategic insights, and consulting services to governments and universities to improve educational and research outcomes.

The number of Egyptian universities on the list stood at 18, the largest among Arab universities.
 
The listed Egyptian universities are Cairo University, Ain Shams University, Mansoura University, Alexandria University, Suez Canal University, Assiut University, Zagazig University, Fayoum University, the British University in Egypt, Helwan University, Al Azhar University, Tanta University, Menoufia  University, Beni Suef University, Sohag University,  Minya University, Benha University and  the American University in Cairo
Saudi Arabia had seven universities on the list; namely King Abdulaziz University, King Saud University, King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, King Saud bin Abdelaziz University for Health Sciences Alfaisal University and Taibah University.
 
Four UAE universities were also listed; namely Khalifa University, United Arab Emirates University, University of Sharjah and the American University of Sharjah.
Tunisia also had four universities on the list; namely Tunis El Manar University, University of Sfax, University of Monastir and University of Carthage. The slate also included four Moroccan universities; Mohamed V University, Cedi Ayyad University, Hassan II University of Casablanca and Mohamed First University of Oujda.
Three Algerian universities – University of Science and Technology Houari Boumediene, University of Djillali Liabès of Sidi Bel-Abbès and  Ferhat Abbas Sétif University – also ranked among the top universities.
 
The list also included three Jordanian Universities; namely Jordan University of Science and Technology, University of Jordan and Hashemite University, alongside Oman’s Sultan Qaboos University and Palestine’s Birzeit University.
The Lebanese University and the American University of Beirut were also on the list.
African universities did not miss their share as universities of South Africa, Uganda, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Tanzania, Mozambique and Democratic Republic of Congo were on the list.
However, the global top 10 universities were Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University, University of Cambridge, University of Oxford, Columbia University, . Princeton University, University of California,  University of Pennsylvania and University of Chicago.
For the eighth year in a row Harvard has been ranked as the top global university by the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR).

CWUR’s rankings grade universities on seven factors without relying on surveys and university data submissions: quality of teaching, alumni employment, quality of faculty, research output, high-quality publications, influence, and citations. The methodology has been enhanced this year to give equal emphasis to the learning environment and research.

The US has eight representatives in the top-10, which has been the case since the rankings started in 2012, and 358 out of the top 2000. All Ivy League institutions feature in the top 50 this year. In China, the number of universities in the top 2000 is 249. All nine universities of the C9 League saw improvements this year. Japan, led by the University of Tokyo in 13th place, has 130 top-2000 institutions.

France, led by the École Polytechnique at number 32, has 95 representatives in the top 2000. In the United Kingdom, 13 of the 24 members of the Russell Group lost ground compared to last year. The University of Cambridge ranks as the top public university in the world for the 6th year in a row. The number of UK representatives in the top 2000 is 94.

19 universities from Russia, led by Moscow State University at number 222, feature in the top 2000. Elsewhere, the University of Melbourne ranks first in Oceania, the University of São Paulo tops Latin America, and the University of Cape Town ranks highest in Africa.
