About 14 tons of waste was retrieved from the seabed of the Red Sea during a 10-day campaign which is the first of its kind to be launched under the “Go Green” initiative as it aimed at protecting biodiversity and natural resources.

The “Go Green” Initiative is sponsored by President Abdel Fattah El Sisi.

The campaign – which was launched on June 19 – is implemented in tandem with the Red Sea governorate, natural protectorates and the Hurghada Environmental Protection and Conservation Association (HEPCA).

Environment Minister Yasmine Fouad said the waste recovered included plastics, glass, metals and wood. The waste was disposed to a safe landfill.

About 13 to 17 divers participated daily in the campaign while taking all needed preventive measures against the coronavirus.

The participants voiced deep appreciation of the efforts being exerted by the Environment Ministry to upgrade marine life and natural protectorate.

The minister said the campaign is also meant to get partners of the civil society and the tourism sector to be engaged in environmental activities in order to protect natural resources and biodiversity.

She noted that the campaign is part of the ministry’s efforts to open new channels of communication with the community to support environment protection activities in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

More about Go Green Initiative:

Egypt launched in January the “Go Green” Initiative to mark a step forward towards attaining the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The three-year initiative aims mainly at spreading awareness among people about the importance of changing their attitudes to save the environment.

The several-stage initiative is meant to address 36 environmental issues.

It also aims to incentivize youths to protect the environment and natural resources, especially curbing air pollution in order to attain Egypt’s strategic goal to reduce air pollution caused by solid particles by 50 percent in 2030.

The initiative also aims at promoting the Egyptian economy, boosting competitiveness and creating jobs in addition to supporting Egypt to fulfill its regional and international undertakings under international conventions in order to achieve sustainability in using natural resources.

The Environment Ministry signed a cooperation protocol with the Higher Education Ministry to amalgamate the environmental issues into the educational curricula.

The first stage of the initiative targets four Egyptian universities in addition to securing about 102 stations for assessing the quality of air.

The initiative will be carried out in several governorates.

The initiative will also expand to include schools under ongoing cooperation with the Education Ministry.
