Egypt launches Climate Pioneers Initiative to upskill youths in climate action

Egyptian Ministers Yasmine Fouad of Environment and Khaled Abdel Ghaffar of Higher Education and Scientific Research launched Climate pioneers Initiative to hone skills of university youths to be able to address climate change.

The initiative was spearheaded on Saturday in collaboration with the Center of Excellence for Research and Applied Studies of Climate Change and Sustainable Development – which is affiliated to the National Research Center.

Fouad underlined the importance of cooperating with the Ministry of Higher Education to qualify university students to be fully aware of climate change issues.

The initiative was launched within the framework of Egypt’s preparations for hosting the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) in November, she said.

She added that the ministry seeks to change youths traditional standpoint on the environment, not only with regard to water, air and noise pollution, but also climate change, biodiversity, desertification, etc.

For his part, Abdel Ghaffar hailed the continued cooperation with the Environment Ministry vis-a-vis all initiatives and programs relevant to the COP27.

He added that Egyptian universities and research institutions would offer all needed support to render COP27 successful, noting that about 35 Egyptian universities participated in COP26 which was held in Glasgow.

He also commended the pivotal role played by the Center of Excellence for Research and Applied Studies of Climate Change and Sustainable Development in confronting the dangers of climate change in Egypt.

He highlighted the importance of promoting researches focusing on raising environmental awareness in Egypt which is one of the main factors for the success of relevant plans and programs.

Within this context, the environment minister said the initiative will help support stat efforts addressing the climate change crisis.

Under the initiative, training programs will be held for youths aging between 17 to 35 years old, Fouad said.
About 200 participants will take part in each two-month training program.

The training programs will focus on the concept of climate change, the national strategy for climate change and means of combating it, main axes of adaptation and climate change mitigation, priorities for combating climate change in Egypt and the world and their relation to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, she added.
