Egypt marks Int’l Charity Day with largest humanitarian convoy targeting 5 million people

The International Day of Charity – observed annually on 5 September – was declared by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012 with an aim to raise awareness and provide a common platform for charity related activities all over the world for individuals, charitable, philanthropic and volunteer organizations for their own purposes on the local, national, regional and international level.

This will also contribute to serving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially SDG 1 on No Poverty and SDG 2 on Zero Hunger.

Egypt’s Tahya Misr Fund organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Solidarity “Charity Doors” ceremony in order to observe this remarkable day.

President Abdel Fattah El Sisi, Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouli and top state officials were keen to attend this ceremony which marks an important annual event which encourages charitable and social responsibility activities.

President Sisi – as a staunch supporter for vulnerable communities – has launched several initiatives to support needy people, topped by Decent Life Initiative and Decent Housing.

President Sisi urges promoting humanitarian activities:

President Sisi called for upgrading and promoting humanitarian activities, referring to contributions of Tahya Misr Fund and civil society organizations to several initiatives, including Decent Housing, homeless children, and Noor Hayat initiatives alongside supporting indebted prisoners.

He said “we still aspire to achieve more in the charity domain,” stressing that there is coordination between state bodies and civil society organizations to regulate charity activities in Egypt.

Sisi said “We have not reached the aspired target of EGP 100 billion for Tahya Misr Fund,” urging the premier to mobilize efforts to secure more financial resources – weather donations or other resources – to boost the fund’s potentials to carry out more charitable activities.

The president said the charitable activities carried out by Tahya Misr Fund and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) were not confined to distributing commodities and assistance, but extended to establishing micro and small sized enterprises.

The president commended the efforts exerted by Tahya Misr Fund and NGOs over the past years, calling for doing more to further promote charitable activities.

Sisi noted that several associations, such as Orman and Misr El Kheir, are exerting outstanding efforts in the charitable work domain.

He said “we managed to improve the living conditions of many families,” but more should be done.

PM: Tahya Misr about to register three new Guinness records

Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouli said Tahya Misr Fund is about to achieve three new Guinness records for launching three largest campaigns for donating medical devices, home appliances and foodstuffs.

Under the campaigns, the fund donated 4,500 devices and distributed one million food cartons among needy families nationwide, he added.

Tahya Misr Fund has already copped two Guinness Records titles for launching the largest chicken donation campaign and the largest campaign for donating foodstuffs, the premier noted.

Such great achievement was realized in partnership with 22 major civil society associations and more than 500 societies nationwide, he added.

The fund succeeded in setting a model of cooperation among the State, private bodies and civil society organizations to support vulnerable families during the hard times that the world experienced over the coronavirus pandemic, he said.

He noted that the fund teamed up with the Social Solidarity Ministry, the Health Ministry and 18 civil society associations to launch the largest humanitarian campaign today with an aim to support five million people.

Meanwhile, Madbouli noted that the fund was established in 2014 with the aim of implementing national development projects and initiatives that address critical social problems troubling the lives of many Egyptians.

PM expounds six main programs of Tahya Misr Fund:

Madbouli expounded that the fund adopts six main programs to accomplish its humanitarian mission.

The first program focuses on health care with one of its initiatives aiming at treating children suffering from muscular dystrophy.

The second program addresses urban development that contributes to developing slum areas and establishing alternative houses for their residents, such as Bashayer al-Khair in Alexandria and Asmarat in Cairo.

The third program is concerned with social support and among its initiatives are “Homeless Children” and “Egypt without debtors”, he said.

The fourth program tackles disasters and crises as it allows rapid intervention when a citizen faces any unexpected crisis.

The fifth program concentrates on education as the fund supports the Zewail University of Science and Technology and the Presidential Leadership Program.

The sixth program focuses on economic empowerment with an aim to secure jobs for youths, support female breadwinners, and establish shops for entrepreneurs.

He noted that there are two main challenges to ensure the sustainability of such charitable activities; namely entrenching the culture of charity among the coming generations and encouraging more volunteers to expand charitable activities.

The premier noted that charitable actions promote sublime values that contribute to developing societies.

Charitable actions contribute to promoting socially responsible activities and giving momentum to Egypt’s drive to attain the sustainable development goals.
