Facebook announces $1 m investment in new climate grant program

Facebook announced a $1 million investment in a new climate grant program, in partnership with the International Fact Checking Network, to support organizations working to combat climate misinformation.

This was part of several measures which Facebook announced to help the community engage with climate topics and ensure people have access to reliable information while reducing misinformation.

These measures also include expanding the Climate Science Center. A year after launching the Climate Science Information Center, Facebook renamed it as the Climate Science Center and added new features, like quizzes, to better inform and engage our community on climate change.

It also planned to increase reliable Information about Climate Change through expanding facts about climate change section of the Climate Science Center with additional facts about climate change.

A recent report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) underscored that while Facebook can’t stop global warming from intensifying over the next 30 years, action the company takes now could still help slow or even stabilize rising temperatures. Facebook know this is an important issue to the community.

In a survey that we ran earlier this year on Facebook, in partnership with the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication, we found that more than 6 in 10 people across all countries and territories surveyed want more information about climate change.

The measures announced by Facebook also include elevating climate voices through kicking off a video series to highlight young climate advocates on Facebook and Instagram between Climate Week and COP26.

Starting during Climate Week, September 20-26, Facebook will highlight creators and advocates who raise awareness of climate change on its apps.

Facebook will also be launching a special food sustainability video with Sydel Curry-Lee on Facebook Watch, featuring a number of climate creators on @Instagram and highlighting several environmental advocates in an effort to inspire and inform others on @Facebook.

It will also continue its support of the Say It With Science series on Facebook, where the UN Foundation and IPCC bring together scientists and youth advocates to present the latest climate science to the community.
