A ministerial conference on “Sports and Sustainable Development Goals in Childhood: Societal issues regarding appropriate physical activities” will take place at UNESCO’s Headquarters on 7 and 8 February 2022.

Experts, decision-makers and other stakeholders will discuss best practices. They will look at the role of sports at the different stages of child development in terms of health, physical integrity and sustainable development education.

While the first years of childhood and adolescence are decisive in the learning of life in society, physical activity and sports practice adapted to the different stages of development of young people contribute to their development and balance.

Sport and physical activities that are adapted to the various stages of child development can contribute to socialization. Should specific physical activities and sports be prioritized according to the age of the child or adolescent in order to support their physical, social and cognitive development? How do physical activities and sport practiced by children and adolescents contribute to achieving sustainable development goals? How can more awareness be raised in this context about sustainable development challenges? What are the levers for action at the European level?

These challenges will be examined during the ministerial conference. Experts, stakeholders and decision-makers will be discussing best practices, looking at the role of sports at the different stages of child development in terms of health, physical integrity and sustainable development education.
